Farrah’s History Time Line

1840 Harrogate Toffee recipe developed by R H Swan, a Baker & Grocer located around Crown Place, Harrogate opposite the Pump Room where Sulphur Waters were taken. The Toffee was designed to clear the palate of the unpleasant taste left by the waters. Ann Farrah, a family member of Mr Swan assisted in the running of the business.

1848 Joseph Farrah, son of Ann registered as Dealer in Groceries & Sundries

1849 John Farrah born to Joseph & Esther.

1873 Farrah’s registered as Toffee Makers at 2 Crescent Place

1887 22nd April: John Farrah registered Farrah’s Harrogate Toffee to establish the recipe as the original. “John Farrah” becomes a Trademark.

1897 16th February: John Farrah Ltd created with three directors. John Farrah, Fred Farrah Ridsdale and Fred Hunter

1900 26th March: John Farrah tenders’ resignation.

1901 Retail premises purchased at 7 Royal Parade

1907 John Farrah died

1920 Cyril Waddington joins the company ultimately becoming Managing Director

1900 – 1939. The company sees substantial growth, exhibiting at many International Exhibitions winning multiple awards.

Production moved to The Toffee Works, Crescent Road.

1954 Michael Waddington joins the company. Going on to become Managing Director after his Father.

1955 Production moves to larger premises on Back Chatsworth Grove, Harrogate.

1997 Farrah’s is sold to Gary & Peter Marston. HRH The Queen visits the factory to see the Toffee being produced.

1998 Own Label Packaging introduced

1999 Production moves to Camwal Road, Starbeck, Harrogate.

2004 New larger retail shop opened at 29 Montpellier Parade, Harrogate

Over the last 20 years Farrah’s has grown considerably, now supplying over 1,200 customers. We offer over 400 products in the Bespoke Confectionery & Fine Food Sector that range from Boxes of Fudge and Drums of Biscuits to Chocolate Bars and Bags of Sweets.

Farrah’s Harrogate Toffee is still packed in our iconic Blue & Silver Tins and sold across the world with outlets in America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand to name but a few.

2019 Farrah’s Olde Sweet Shop included in Harrogate Monopoly Edition.
